2000 UK Movies | Billy Elliot Directed By Stephen Daldry

2000 UK Movies | Billy Elliot

Nominated for 3 Oscars. Another 49 wins and 54 nominations

Yorkshire, during the endless, violent 1984 strike against the Thatcher closure of British coal mines. Widower Jackie Elliot and his firstborn, fellow miner Tony, take a dim view of 11 year-old second son Billy's poor record in boxing class, which worsens when they discover he sneakily transferred to the neighboring, otherwise girls-only-attended ballet class. Only one schoolmate, closet-gay Michael Caffrey, encourages Billy's desire, aroused by the teacher, who judged him talented enough for private lesson, to train and try out for the world-renowned Royal Ballet audition. Only the prospect of a fancy career unimagined in the pauper quarter may twist pa and big brother's opposition to indispensable support.

Billy Elliot (2000) Trivia

Jamie Bell took ballet and other dance classes while in secondary school, which caused him to often be ridiculed by his peers. He used some of these experiences as inspiration while playing Billy Elliot.

In the final scene, the ballet in which Billy performs is Mathew Bourne's version of "Swan Lake" where all the Swans are played by men. Billy plays the part of the Swan, the same part he discusses with Mrs Wilkinson earlier in the film.

One of the great qualms of the entire film was whether Mrs. Wilkinson should be there in the final scene, where the older Billy Elliot performs Swan Lake. Eventually, it came down to the fact that 'Julie Walters' wasn't available for filming.

Billy Elliot's original title was 'Dancer', but when they took the film to the Cannes Film Festival, there was another film called Dancer in the Dark (2000), which won the Palmes D'Or, prompting confusion; indeed, Universal Studios called the directors, producers and writer up and congratulated them. They then realized they had to change the name and settled ('rather lamely', joked the writer) on 'Billy Elliot'.

The musical version of the film, which hit the West End in 2005 to rave reviews and numerous awards and nominations, reportedly cost £5.5 million to make: around £3 million more than the film version. Furthermore, the Broadway production cost $18 million to make, over three times as much as the original film's budget. All three were a financial success.

Jamie Bell is the only one of the four principals to actually come from the area where the film is set.

Jamie Bell was going through puberty at the time of filming. Some of his dialog had to be post-synched as his voice had broken. And the opening scene in which he jumps up and down on a bed to T-Rex's "Cosmic Dancer" was shot over a lengthy period of time. For the latter takes, Bell had acquired hair on his legs and had to have them shaved.

Goofs forBilly Elliot (Quiero bailar)

  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Billy's brother listens to music in his room (at 00:42:07) while wearing headphones but in cuts to the father and grandmother in other rooms in the house they hear the music as well. Some stereos allow the use of headphones and speakers together.
  • Continuity: When Jackie is inside the bus leading to the mine, an egg hits his window (at 01:14:40), but when the bus is viewed from outside, the window is clean (01:14:44).
  • Continuity: When Billy visits Debbie at her house, he has his school bag with him (at 00:29:37), but he doesn't have it any more when he is driven home (00:35:35).
  • Continuity: The punch-bag in the dimly lit shot of the gymnasium when Mrs Wilkinson is talking to Billy is moving in one shot (at 00:39:15), then stationary in the next (00:39:21), then moving again (00:40:20).
  • Continuity: When Billy goes to visit his mother's grave, her gravestone describes her as "wife of Peter" (at 00:13:31). However, later in the film, Billy's dad is referred to as Jackie (at 00:22:51, 00:68:59 and 00:73:49).
  • Continuity: Right after Mrs. Wilkinson slaps Billy on the face, at the locker room, we see her from behind with her hands on her face (at 00:47:33 with fingers as if praying). In the next shot, her hands are in a totally different position (at 00:47:34 with clasped hands on her face).
  • Continuity: When Jackie is on the bus taking him back to the mines, the strikers pull the protective cage off the window of the right side of the bus. Moments later when the bus pulls into the coal yard, all the windows on the right of the bus have the protective caging.

Memorable quotes forBilly Elliot (Quiero bailar)

Dad: Listen, have you noticed anything weird about our Billy lately?
Tony: What are you after like, a list?

Mrs. Wilkinson: Right, Mr. Braithwaite, "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow".
[to herself]
Mrs. Wilkinson: Fat chance!

Billy: So what about your mother? Does she have sex?
Debbie: No, she's unfulfilled. That's why she dances.
Billy: She dances instead of sex? Your family's weird!

Billy: I don't want a childhood. I want to be a ballet dancer.

Billy: Miss, you don't fancy me do, do you?
Mrs. Wilkinson: No, Billy. Funnily enough, I don't. Now piss off!
Billy: [smiling] Piss off yourself

Debbie: If you want, I'll show you me fanny.
Billy: Nah, I'm all right.

Mr. Braithwaite: You look like a right wanker to me, son.

Mrs. Wilkinson: This'll sound strange, Billy, but for some time now I've been thinkin' of the Royal Ballet School.
Billy: Aren't you a bit old, miss?
Mrs. Wilkinson: No, not me... you! I'm the bloody teacher!

Billy: So, what's it like, like?
Dad: What's what like?
Billy: London.
Dad: I don't know, son. I never made it past Durham.
Billy: Have you never been?
Dad: Why would I want to go to London?
Billy: It's the capital city!
Dad: Well, there are no mines in London.
Billy: Jesus Christ, is that all you think about?

Michael: Oi, dancing boy!
[Billy runs to Michael]
Dad: We'll miss the bus, Billy!
Tony: Will you stop being an old fucking woman?

Gary Poulson: What are you deeing man? This is hand to hand combat not a bloody tea dance!

Billy: I think I'm scared, Dad.
Dad: That's okay, son. We're all scared.
Billy: Well... if I don't like it, can I still come back?
Dad: Are you kidding? We've let out your room.
[straight face then laughter]

Tutor 1: What does it feel like when you're dancing?
Billy: Don't know. Sorta feels good. Sorta stiff and that, but once I get going... then I like, forget everything. And... sorta disappear. Sorta disappear. Like I feel a change in my whole body. And I've got this fire in my body. I'm just there. Flyin' like a bird. Like electricity. Yeah, like electricity.

Mrs. Wilkinson: She must've been a very special woman, your mother.
Billy: No she was just me mam.

NCB Official: Can you tell us why you first became interested in ballet?
Billy: Don't know.
[pauses]
Billy: Just was.
NCB Official: Well was there any particular aspect of the ballet which caught your imagination?
Billy: The dancin'.

USA 2010 Movies | Undisputed III: Redemption Directed By Isaac Florentine

Russian inmate Boyka, now severely hobbled by the knee injury suffered at the end of Undisputed 2. No longer the feared prison fighter he was, he has declined so far that he is now good only for cleaning toilets. But when a new prison fight tournament begins - an international affair, matching the best fighters from prisons around the globe, enticing them with the promise of freedom for the winner - Boyka must reclaim his dignity and fight for his position in the tournament.

Undisputed III won Best Director Award and Best Fight Choreographer in the 2010 edition of ActionFest.

Genres: Action | Crime | Drama

Motion Picture Rating (MPAA)
Rated R for brutal bloody violence and pervasive language.

Country: USA

Language: English | Spanish (only a few words) | Portuguese (only a few words)

Runtime: USA: 96 min

Goofs for Undisputed III: Redemption (2010)

Factual errors: Throughout the movie, North Korean and French flags are shown the wrong way round.

Factual errors: When Gaga watches the tournament tree in the casino room, the Greek flag is shown the wrong way round on the screen.

Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Turbo first says his line about his hearing coming and going, his lips are out of sync with the audio.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Judging by his tattoos and his necklace, Boyka is clearly an Orthodox Christian. Yet when he is praying in his cell, he does the Sign of the Cross the way Catholic Christians do it, touching his forehead, then his left shoulder and finally his right shoulder. Orthodox Christians touch their right shoulder and then their left shoulder when making the Sign.

Continuity: In the end scene where Boyka steps out of the car and has a small conversation with Turbo, Boyka is shown standing near the one side of the car. But when Turbo closes the door and the car leaves, Boyka is shown standing and looking at it from behind

Continuity: During the last fight scene between Uri Boyka (Adkins) and Raul 'Dolor' Quinones (Zaror) just after Boyka is knocked out of the ring, Dolor turns around with his arms spread to receive praise from the crowd, his back tattoo has been smeared off. When Boyka comes back into the ring with the "bandage" on his leg, we can see that the tattoo has been restored.

Incorrectly Regarded As Goofs: After receiving the personalized cigarette box Dorian says "Thank you Harry". The character's name is Henry. However, both Harry and Henry are considered alternative versions of the same name.

Quotes:

Dorian Gray: [trying to decline women and drink at a brothel] Well, perhaps I have a stronger conscience.
Lord Henry Wotton: [dismissively] 'Conscience.' It's just a polite word for 'cowardice.' No civilized man regrets a pleasure.

Sadness Waltz - Tivoli Symphony Orchestra | Dorian Gray Movie Soundtrack

Dorian Gray: [On a girl he saw, who just departed with a man] That was probably her husband.
Lord Henry Wotton: Yes, very sensible... People die of common sense, Dorian, one lost moment at a time. Life is a moment. There is no hereafter. So make it burn always with the hardest flame.

St. Louis Rag - Tom Turpin | Dorian Gray Movie Soundtrack

Emily Wotton: I hope I'm not interrupting your reminiscence?
Lord Henry Wotton: One charm of the past, is that it's the past.
Emily Wotton: Hmm... I hope you're not also a dreary old cynic?
Dorian Gray: What is there to believe in?
Emily Wotton: Our developments.
Dorian Gray: All I see is decay.
Emily Wotton: For the religion.
Dorian Gray: Fashionable substitute for believe.
Emily Wotton: Art.
Dorian Gray: Formality.
Emily Wotton: Love.
Dorian Gray: An Illusion.
Lord Henry Wotton: Bravo!
Emily Wotton: Wow... you both cut the world to pieces, don't you? Thank you for the cigarette!
Dorian Gray: Unusual woman.
Lord Henry Wotton: She ought to be... she's my daughter.

Carnival Of Venice - Nicolo Paganini | Dorian Gray Movie Soundtrack

Lord Henry Wotton: There's no shame in pleasure. Man just wants to be happy. But society wants him to be good. And when he's good, he's rarely happy. But when he's happy, he's always good.

Romantic Movies | Blue Valentine Directed By Derek Cianfrance

Storyline: Dean Pereira and Cindy Heller Pereira are a young, working class married couple - Dean currently working as a painter, and Cindy working as a nurse in a medical clinic - with a young daughter named Frankie. Despite their relatively tender ages, they are both ravaged by the life they've eked out together and by the experiences they've had leading into their marriage. Dean, a high school drop out, comes from a broken home, where he never really had a mother figure. He never saw himself getting married or having a family despite falling in love at first sight with Cindy. He doesn't have any professional ambition beyond his current work - which he enjoys since he feels he can knock off a beer at 8 o'clock in the morning without it affecting his work - although Cindy believes he has so much more potential in life. Cindy also comes from a dysfunctional family, with her own mother and father not setting an example of a harmonious married or family life...

A Love Story.
Blue Valentine (2010) Trivia

The screenplay won the 2006 Chrysler Film Project contest. The prize was $1 million of funding, courtesy of the Chrysler Brand and production company Silverwood Films.

Smoking Gun Bleeding Knives - Ryan Gosling | Blue Valentine Soundtrack

The scenes in the 'past' when Dean and Cindy are falling in love were shot first, in three weeks. After this Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams spent a month together in a rented house to age themselves in preparation for the 'present' scenes. They spent a lot of their time grocery shopping, cooking dinner and learning to pick fights with each other.

The older appearance of Dean is based on director Derek Cianfrance, who is bearded and has pattern baldness. The clothing of the younger Dean is also based on Cianfrance's style of clothing.

In Ear Park - Department Of Eagles | Blue Valentine Soundtrack
Derek Cianfrance spent 12 years making the movie. During that process, Cianfrance said that he wrote about 67 drafts, mostly each draft containing content added / modified based on on-set improvisations, inspirational encounters etc., while he worked on several documentaries to secure more funding for the movie.

I Can't Stop Thinking About It - The Dirtbombs | Blue Valentine Soundtrack

When filming the argument scenes, Derek Cianfrance gave instructions to Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling individually without the knowledge of the other in order to create more tension between Dean and Cindy. For Williams, Cianfrance would instruct her to try to leave the room, use any way to break out of the argument with Gosling etc. For Gosling, Cianfrance would tell him to use any means to persuade, get Williams attention, etc. Gosling has stated it was a new and interesting process as it became a tug game on set.

Easier - Grizzly Bear | Blue Valentine Soundtrack

The film's title comes from Tom Waits's album of the same name.

Memorable quotes by Dean for Blue Valentine

Dean: We're inside a robot's vagina
Dean: Babe, that's how they laugh in the future!
Dean: I can't really sing. I have to sing goofy, in order to sing. I have to sing stupid.
Shift - Grizzly Bear | Blue Valentine Movie Soundtrack
Dean: I didn't want to be somebody's husband and I didn't want to be somebody's dad, that wasn't my goal in life. But somehow it was. I work so I can do that.
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - The Platters | Blue Valentine Movie Soundtrack
Dean: I feel like men are more romantic than women. When we get married we marry, like, one girl, 'cause we're resistant the whole way until we meet one girl and we think I'd be an idiot if I didn't marry this girl she's so great. But it seems like girls get to a place where they just kinda pick the best option... 'Oh he's got a good job.' I mean they spend their whole life looking for Prince Charming and then they marry the guy who's got a good job and is gonna stick around.
Dean: In my experience, the prettier a girl is, the more nuts she is... which makes you insane. You're probably nutty coo coo crazy.
Cindy: I like how you can compliment and insult somebody at the same time, in equal measure. Read more memorable quotes »
